Last weekend was my annual Christmas shopping trip with my Mom and sister. We make a day of it and get all our shopping for each other’s families done in one shot, which is much easier than trying to figure out on my own what to by my teenage nieces and nephews. I love it, but I need a mega dose of caffeine to keep up with the power shoppers in my family.
I’ve been wanting to try a vinyl project with my Silhouette, and industrial-size travel mugs were the inspiration for venturing into my first multi-color project. And since other bloggers do such a great job of explaining Silhouette techniques, I’m sharing the materials and tutorials that made the process relatively easy. Here’s everything that went into these mugs:
- 20.9 oz insulated travel mugs
- Oracal 751 permanent vinyl (I used red and green from the multicolor pack and purchased a separate sheet of silver)
- Silhouette cut files
I followed this tutorial to ungroup the designs so I could cut each of the colors separately. If you don’t want to go to the trouble of separating the colors, you could just cut the full designs in each color and only use the bits you want.
I found this tutorial helpful for layering the colors together and keeping everything aligned. With three colors instead of two I had to get a bit creative about picking up and layering each color so I didn’t end up with the second color sandwiched between the transfer paper. It was easiest for me to use thin strips of transfer tape just big enough to grab the pieces, and once all of them were in place I cut one big piece of transfer tape to cover the whole thing and transfer all the layers to the mugs.
This was definitely a learning experience but I love how the mugs turned out and I can’t wait to make more!
