Last year I made a 3D Valentine shadowbox and a 3D Easter egg shadowbox, and they were two of my favorite projects for the year. I drafted out the shapes for a shamrock version at the same time but didn’t get around to making it then, so I pulled out my scrapbooking paper over the weekend and got one done in time for this year’s decorating.
To make your own shadowbox you’ll need:
- A 12″x12″ shadowbox frame (I used this one from Joann’s)
- One 12″x12″ sheet of scrapbook paper for the background
- Four 12″x12″ sheets of green cardstock for the shamrock (Make sure it’s the same color on both sides.)
- Double-sided Scotch tape
- The shamrock template (download it here)
Cover the shadowbox backing with a sheet of scrapbook paper.
Divide the background paper into 9 equal sections by drawing light pencil horizontal and vertical lines 4″ apart.
Using the templates as a guide, cut out one set of four shapes for each shamrock.
Stack up the templates and hold them together with paperclips. Draw a light pencil line down the center of the top shamrock as a stitching guide.
Set your sewing machine for a longer stitch link and sew down the middle of each set, stopping just before you get to the stem. (The stem is narrow. If you sew through it, it will tear when you fold the layers.)
Fold the top three layers of each shamrock to the center and fluff them up until you’re happy with how they look, leaving the bottom layer flat.
Line up the shamrocks on the background paper using the pencil line as a guide and use double-sided tape to hold them in place.
Done!
