Between holiday to-do’s and family obligations, it took a while to find a free day to get my sewing room remodel underway. First, a few outgrown pieces of furniture were moved out and repurposed in other areas of the house. Books, supplies and fabrics were temporarily relegated to storage bins, and it was time to tackle the nasty carpet.
I pulled up a corner inside the closet first and the floor underneath looked to be in decent shape, so we took a chance and ripped out the lot. My husband and son pitched in, bless their hearts, and we managed to take the carpet out in one big piece that will be cleaned and re-used in our basement at some point.
With the exception of one very small corner, the flooring underneath is sound but it’s three different kinds of wood in varying widths and two different colors, and covered in paint spatters. I’d seen painted floors on Pinterest and was already leaning toward that option, but the multi-color hardwood pretty much sealed that decision. It would be way more work than I’m willing to put in to stain it, I don’t have the budget for new flooring and I’m leaning toward a light, cottagy look for this room.
The bookcases are still in boxes and will stay there until the walls and floor are painted. In the midst of the mess I still have a few last-minute gifts to make, so I’m working out plastic bins and trying to find my quilt ruler. It went missing at some point, and I’m completely incapable of cutting a straight line without it. I may have to make a last-minute appeal to Santa for another one if it doesn’t turn up soon!
